What Types of VA Benefits are Available?
VA benefits can come in a variety of forms to include medical benefits, nursing home care and the often overlooked “aid and attendance”.
Medical Benefits are provided in a health benefits plan available to enrolled veterans. Due to budgetary constraints these benefits are delivered based on a priority system. Once enrolled veterans are assigned to priority groups, which determine the types of services they may access. These benefits include prescription drugs, home health services and hospice care. If a veteran or the surviving spouse qualifies for this non-service related disability pension, you may automatically receive free prescriptions.
Nursing Home Care can be paid for with this VA benefit, allowing the veteran to hold onto his or her assets for as long as possible. Even if the veteran is eligible for Medicaid, the benefit will provide an additional $90 a month in discretionary income.
Aid and Attendance can be an excellent benefit for long-term care for the elderly, either at home, in an assisted living facility or in a long-term care facility. This benefit is available to certain wartime veterans and their dependents that meet specific criteria. Aid and Attendance benefit amounts will vary based on their out of pocket medical expenses and monthly income.
What if I have non-service related condition?
Under a rule adopted in 2002, the VA will grant a priority level to “severely disabled” veterans even if their immediate health problem is not a service related injury. Aid and Attendance benefits are available to veterans who are totally disabled because of non-service related conditions. It is also available to their spouse or their surviving spouse. Korean War: June 27, 1950 – January 31, 1955
Vietnam War: August 5, 1964 - May 7, 1975
For those in Vietnam: February 28, 1961 – May 7, 1975
