Many special needs children lack plans for lifetime of care

Posted on Apr 17, 2009

Raising a child with special needs can be challenging for parents, so much so that they may neglect other areas of their life.  One area that is often overlooked is planning for the future, something that can ultimately be detrimental to the well-being of a special needs child.

With approximately 2.6 million children in the United States classified as special needs, long-term plans for their care is critical to not only the individual children but to the country.  Without adequate forethought, after the death of caregivers or parents there might be nobody left but the government to care for the special needs individual.

A survey by The Hartford found that 62% of parents with a special needs child had no plan for the future care of their child.  In addition, parents who had made plans often made mistakes that could disqualify their child from receiving government assistance.

The study highlights the importance of consulting with professionals about special needs trusts, life insurance policies, financial plans, and other estate planning activities that can be used to preserve a secure future for a special needs child.
