In a move to change up her legal team, Katherine Jackson, mother of pop star Michael Jackson, found herself without representation during a hearing last week. Ms. Jackson sought to replace her team of probate lawyers with a different attorney, who declined to appear with her in court until her former attorneys formally relinquished their roles.
Ms. Jackson was one of the main beneficiaries of her son Michael’s estate, and has also been named the permanent guardian of Mr. Jackson’s three children. The decision was made to find a new probate attorney in order to have a “different perspective and a fresh look” at how Mr. Jackson’s estate was being handled.
The newly named probate attorney for Ms. Jackson is Adam Streisand, a lawyer who is no stranger to celebrity estate cases. Mr. Streisand has previously represented the estates of Anna Nicole Smith, Ray Charles and Marlon Brando.
One issue facing Ms. Jackson is the role being played by the administrators of her son’s estate, attorney John Branca and music executive John McClain. Ms. Jackson previously challenged the administrators without invoking a “no contest” clause that Michael Jackson had included in his will.
Ms. Jackson’s former probate attorneys had questioned the authority of the estate’s administrators, but failed to file those objections. There were concerns that the former attorneys had contributed to unnecessary legal delays.
