After his tragic and untimely death, Michael Jackson has left behind a tangled estate complicated by custody issues that may take lawyers years to unravel.
One major issue who will get custody of Mr. Jackson’s three children. Since at this time it is unknown if Jackson had a will, there is a great deal of speculation in legal circles about the challenges that will be faced settling his unusual estate.
Despite widespread rumors of financial difficulties, Jackson had some notable items including music catalogues, royalties, and rights to his image. Some have suggested that Jackson’s estate will be left to his children, but at this point it is unknown.
As for the children, it remains to be seen if custody of his two oldest children, Prince Michael Jackson, 12, and sister Paris, 11, will go to their biological mother Debbie Rowe. Years ago Rowe attempted to give up all legal rights to the children, stating that they were Jackson’s children. A judge refused to hear the request, leaving Jackson with physical custody only and keeping the door open for Rowe.
Jackson’s youngest child, Prince Michael II, 7, was also born from a surrogate mother however her identity has never been publicly revealed. Right now the children are being cared for by Jackson’s mother Katherine and a nanny.
