What To Do Immediately When Someone Dies...

When someone passes away, the first decision most people have to make is choosing a funeral home or mortuary. As with everything, planning ahead proves easier on everyone.

The funeral home will pick up the body, coordinate the memorial services, arrange obituary notices, notify Social Security, the Veterans Administration if applicable, and order death certificates. As it is easiest to get death certificates at this time, we recommend requesting at least 24 of them. You will be amazed at how many death certificates will be used. They are necessary for every fiancial institution and insurance company that the decedent dealth with as well as being necessary to tranfer titles to vehicles and other property.

Most funeral homes are skilled at dealing with the emotional and practical problems which occur when someone passes away. But to put the planning into perspective, planning a funeral and planning a wedding are very similar in many respects. All the relatives and friends have to be notified, meals planned, travel arrangements made, and religious services organized. The difference is we take one or two years to plan a typical wedding but only have a few days to make funeral arrangements. This puts pressure on everyone at a highly emotional time and makes it even more difficult on the person in charge. All the arrangements and the short time frame combined with the emotional pain and stress can cause strife in the closest of families. Please remember to be considerate and patient with each other as each person grieves and handles stress differently.
