What is Medicaid and Why Should I Care?

Medicaid is a federal program that is implemented by the state. Medicaid typically pays for long term skilled nursing care. Long term skilled nusing care is expensive and the costs are skyrocketing. For example, in Pennsylvania, one month of skilled care costs over $7,000 per month, $84,000 per year! I don't care how much money you have, $7,000 a month is A LOT of money.

You should care about Medicaid because if you do not have a lot of money or long term care insurance, Medicaid is the ONLY source we have to pay for long term skilled care.

In Pennsylvania, approximately 63% of people in skilled long term care facilities have their bills paid by Medicaid. Person on Medicaid ended up there in one of two ways:

1) Either they spent all the money they had on care, had no money left and then qualified for Medicaid, or

2) They did some planning to protect assets, (i.e. maybe for an at-home spouse) and qualified for Medicaid as soon as possible.

The goal is - qualify for Medicaid as soon as possible by protecting your assets! Don't wait, plan now, so you won't be caught in a situation where you have to spend down your money in order to qualify. With the help of our planning, we can help you to avoid making disastrous decisions pertaining to paying for long term care.
