Five Estate Plan Basics
Estate planning is an important part of preparing for your future, and the future of your family. With proper estate planning, you can save your heirs money on taxes, avoid the public scrutiny of the probate process, ensure that your beneficiaries receive assets from your estate when and how you see fit, and more.
If you don’t have an estate plan or if you have one and aren’t sure if it covers all the basics, then maybe it is time to talk to an attorney. In the meantime, here are a few basics that most estate plans should contain:
Five Estate Plan Basics
- First, you need a will. The purpose of a will is to name a person (or persons) to manage your estate after your death and provide for the transfer of your property to your beneficiaries. It can also name guardians for your children.
- You should consider a living will. This is a document that states your wishes regarding extreme medical treatment in case you become incapacitated.
- A durable power of attorney. This document spells out who can make financial decisions for you if you are no longer able to make those decisions yourself.
- A health-care proxy. Similar to the durable power of attorney, except this document empowers another person to make medical decisions for you in case you become incapacitated.
- Insurance. Discuss with your attorney the benefits of life and disability insurance. Life insurance is intended to provide your family with income if you die, and disability insurance is intended to replace income if you are injured or sick and cannot work.
