Asset Protection - What is the difference between Medicare and Medicaid?

Medicare is a health care program if we are 65 or older or are disabled. IN general, Medicare, depending that the supplement can pay for just about all medical care as long as one is improving, includes up to a maxiumum 100 days of skilled long term care.

But what happens if one does not or will not improve? What if someone has a degenerative disease such as Alzheimer's, MS, Parkinson's, dementia, etc? Chances are if you have one of these diseases, at some point in time you will need skilled long-term care. Medicare WILL NOT pay for this care. On average, you will also live 8 to 12 years after diagnosis.

Medicaid, on the other hand, WILL play for this skilled care, BUT, you have to be broke to qualify for Medicaid. For example, if you are a single person in a Pennsylvania skilled care facility that accepts Medicaid, and you have $100,000 in the bank, you would have to spend your assets down to $8,000 or $2400 in Pennsylvania prior to qualifying for Medicaid.
