Frequently Asked Questions

Q: When should I review my estate plan?

A: One mistake people make is creating an estate plan and then locking it away and forgetting about it.  Estate plans should be considered living documents that need to be updated to stay in sync with your life as you change and your estate changes.

Consider reviewing your estate plan every two to three years or if you experience an important life event.  Some life changes that might warrant a review of your estate plan include:

  • Birth, death, marriage, divorce
  • Disability (your own or your beneficiary)
  • A substantial change in your net worth (increase or decrease)
  • A change in the types of assets you hold
  • If you buy or sell a business or enter into a new business arrangement
  • If you move to a new state
  • If there are any significant changes to federal or state laws that would affect your estate
